One of the endearing characteristics of youth, is the childish capacity to tell the truth without any consideration for consequences. We began to take our steps towards the corruption of our childhood innocence, only when the adults taught us that there are unpleasant consequences for our actions and inactions, once we owned up to them, and they disapproved.
The age of responsibility dawned, almost always announced by the cane, or the withdrawal of some privileges or the other. Telling the truth, gradually became a sin, and when you are older, and the haters of truth are men of power, or a criminal state and its evil rulers, the truth becomes a crime. If you are lucky they’ll use the governance systems to cage and punish you. Ask Yele, Agba, and Mandate, and if you’re considered particularly irritating, you might just disappear like Daddiyata.
The truth is not only a sin before the rulers and the state, it has become an unpardonable offense, even to the beneficiaries of the exertions of those that have insisted on telling the uncomfortable truth to power. The victims have developed a deep and abiding love for their enslavers, and are sometimes even more offended than the ones that have kept them in bondage. They fight and kill on behalf of their lords and masters, and they are the loudest defenders of their sickening realities. The more afflicted they are, the louder they protest the genius of their owners.
If you want their attention, titillate them with tales that rehashes and regurgitate the many myths and lies that are the glues holding together their chains, and they will cackle for days, distracted from their existential pains, by the modern circuses, regularly foisted on them by the feudal lords. Omuti gbagbe ise, oti da, ise o lo. The drunk might forget his poverty whilst inebriated, but with sobriety his reality dawns.
Whilst Nigerians have largely shown themselves inured to the worst effects of the Covid pandemic, the Nigerian state, its governance systems, and the evil, amoral, and despotic rulers, have proven that they are not capable of rising to the challenges of leadership, and from the lethargic, unimaginative, and lead footed president, to the audiovisual governance of the Jagabandits of Lagos, the uncomfortable truth, is that Nigerias have been the victims of a most vile Scamdemic.
The Nigerian state has overseen a lockdown that is the exact opposite of what we pretended to copy. In pursuit of the lockdown directives, its security forces murdered the citizens. Whilst the people were forcefully kept in their homes, names like “Awawa Boys” “Million Dollar Boys” “Omije” and so on and so forth, were introduced into the lexicon of Lagos residents, and the ones that were gainfully employed by MC Mushroompikin, were seen “doing” Alaye, begging by day, and robbing in the dark.
Some pastors and imams became covidiots, and some became conspiracy theorists. Otherwise intelligent men began to share conspiracy theories, and Bill Gates became the Antichrist. And yes, it is the 5G being deployed that is causing the virus. Truth became the first casualty of the Nigerian scamdemic.
“According to data from the NCDC, the COVID-19 situation report as at 29 April 2020 shows that Nigeria, a country of nearly 200 million people, has managed to test 13,689 persons in five weeks of lockdown, which came out with a total of 1,728 positive cases with 51 deaths” BusinessDay.
Beyond the paparazzi, the reality is that we lag behind South Africa and Ghana in testing, we have minimal contact tracing capacity, and the government is merely pretending to be doing something about the pandemic, whilst it in truth, had long been forced to admit that our only option, was to hope for herd immunity, with minimal fatality rate. When sufficient numbers have developed antibodies from having survived the infection, wether they were aware that they were sick or they were not, the herd immunity would have been achieved.
I have a friend that had flulike symptoms, he went to the Lagos state test center in Lekki over three weeks ago. He is still awaiting the results. If he was infected, of exactly what use, are the delayed results? And if he has subsequently become infected, how exactly would a negative result from the test conducted weeks ago, help him? Lagos is the epicenter of the disease, and the Nigerian center of excellent fraudulence. They eased the lockdown when the infection rate increased, and even had opinion polls as fig leaves for irresponsible governance.
The variant of Covid in some states are known to move only in the evening, so they have dusk to dawn curfews and no lockdowns, the Rambo in Rivers became a wrecking ball, and Gandollar wants his own Covik reliefs like Lagos. It is comedy half hour, all across the Nigerian states and their capitals.
These are the days after Covid. The harvest of the lies told are ripening. The Coronavirus Pandemic shall soon be declared over in Nigeria. The witches are available to be blamed for any unexplained deaths, and there are always “verbal autopsies” to explain the rest. Thing is, who’s counting? There are over 200 Million heads in the Nigerian herd, and ours is a cowntry untouched by sanity.
Whilst the truth might offend you, be sure to keep in mind: the truth is not a sin. I dey my house, come and beat me. 😏🙄
