Nigeria under Buhari’s command, has become as the Charlie Boy Show. Anything and everything, that were once believed to be abominable, have become normalized. Our worst fears have overtaken us, and evil has become commonplace in our lives and in our country.
At the peak of the artistic peregrinations of the weird creature known as Charlie Boy, he had a show that was widely seen on Nigerian TV, long before the ubiquitous cable television of this age, and I speak to a not too distant past, when we waited to be assaulted by NTA at around 5PM. The age of 24 hours broadcast had not began, and we watched endless reruns of Skippy The Bush Kangaroo. The Charlie Boy Show was unique and ahead of its time.
Charles Oputa is a shock jock. Born to a man whose judicial career was distinguished by legal scholarship and high jurisprudence, Charlie brought American punk culture into Nigerian pop culture. He came complete with the ear piercings, the chains, weird hairdos, tattoos, dark gothic style, even weirder music, and everything in between, hitherto unseen, and deliberately shocking. Charlie took delight in shocking his audience with his unabashed and over the top sexuality. Denrele Edun is a good student.
Charlie had a punchline he’d launch into with his sidekick on the show, the much more sedate, but no less gifted Tunde Obe. “Welcome to the Charlie Boy Show, WHERE ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!

On Buhari’s watch, Leah remains unfound. On Buhari’s watch, Pondei fainted without consequence, on the watch of the saint of Daura, Akpabio, his newly minted saint, publicly confessed to high crimes and graft. On Buhari’s watch, we have heard of the need for farmers to ensure that they are in receipt of army clearance, before they might go to their farms. We have seen abominations bestride the land by day, and heard the unspeakable shouted in the marketplace with nary an eyebrow raised.
When you have refused to drink of the Kool-Aid of idiotic nonsense being served by Sanwo-Olu, the Nigerian Army, and the “Presidency” (whatever that means in a regime figure-headed by a ventriloquist’s doll) concerning the undeniable evils that were perpetrated by the army and the rulers of Lagos state at the Lekki tollgate, the several versions of The Kankara Tales, wouldn’t move you a jot, you are already well aware of the truth: the Nigerian state is quintessentially evil, its rulers are satanic, and under the Buharish coalition in power: ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN AND MOST LIKELY WILL.
